LilFest Presents - Sun, Jun 8 Mark Dvorak Harmony Workshop; Sat, Jun 28 Michael Smith & Tonight

Dear Ones,
Thank you every one! It's actually really nice to receive so many corrections! Yes, Mark's website is right, and preparing for the painters in the living room, kitchen and breakfast room has made me a little looney - Mark Dvorak's Harmony Singing Workshop is 1 - 3 PM on Sunday the 8th of June. You all caught me. And the interest in it is really lovely! OK, Nancy, now take the awe out of your
voice. Ahem. Michael Smith is coming
back.
I didn't have this awe problem when I first
wrote about him, but year by year I've
presented Michael again and again at industry
showcases, at LilFest Festival, and seen his
theater work -- and now my breath is taken
away by his gift. Whether you're already on
the Michael Smith page, or among the people
to whom this name is lightly familiar,
floating on the river of Smiths and Joneses,
this is a concert which is not to be missed.
And, what is more, YOUR CHANCE, to start
or develop your performance skills!
Many of the LilFest "Us" have taken classes
at the Old Town School and love to pluck,
strum, plunk and harmonize ourselves. When
Mark Dvorak asked me if I thought a
LilFest
Harmony Workshop with Mark would work, I said
"Yes!." Mark is a loving, inclusive,
effective teacher and his classes and playing
groups thrive. Reserve a spot on a Sunday
afternoon to sing along. The parking should
be easy, the experience casual, bring light
refreshments if you wish, but this is not a meal.
I want to highlight Bill's Blues (1029
Davis, Evanston) show
tonight - at 7PM the John Elder & Jim
Gary
Double Bill. While the names aren't
household words, they are talents with
histories and interest from Champaign Urbana
and Michigan/Chicago. If you like the known
names, do me a favor and trust me on the
lesser known names too!
John Elder has been singing and playing
fingerstyle blues, roots and traditional
music since 1962, when he fell under the
spell of the early folk revival. His playing
style is reminiscent of Brownie McGhee, Doc
Watson, and Jorma Kaukonen. In the 60's his
folk song club at Indiana University brought
him into close contact with Doc, Reverend
Gary Davis, the New Lost City Ramblers, Jesse
Fuller, and other folk artists in that
exciting time. His playing and singing has
grown and matured over the decades. John
has been playing in clubs in central Illinois
near Champaign for the past few years, and
Bill's is his first Chicago area performance.
Jim Gary has been delighting audiences with
his charming wit, "very solid" songwriting
(Kevin's Celtic & Folk Music CD Reviews) and
"one of the warmest and richest voices on the
local scene" (Maple Street Chapel Concert
Series from the Kerrville Folk Festival "New
Folk" stage to Nashville's Bluebird Café's
Sunday Writers' Night. Jim grew up is
southeastern Michigan listening to the sounds
of the '60s - Motown, Beatles and all those
great Jimmy Webb songs. Picking up a guitar
at age 14, he started learning chords and
moved on to fingerpicking the songs of John
Denver, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, James Taylor
and Gordon Lightfoot. During this time (as
well as through high school), Jim was writing
songs - dozens of them with some "keepers"
showing up along the way. Working his way
west, Jim eventually wound up in Chicago -
the stomping grounds of Steve Goodman, John
Prine, Bob Gibson and Michael Smith. Honing
his songwriting craft at the Old Town School
of Folk Music with Gibson and Smith (Goodman
had left for L.A. and Prine for Nashville),
Jim also fell in with the likes of Frank
Tedesso, Dan Bern, Al Day, Brian Anderson and
Jim McCandless. Indeed, Bob Gibson introduced
Jim to the Kerrville Folk Festival where he
was a "New Folk" finalist.

"...one of a vanishing breed...
Although all of us benefit from the tradition,
Dvorak is one of the few who keep it alive.
Listen. Join in."
Utah Phillips
"No one spins a yarn or sings an old timey song
with more skill and respect than Mark Dvorak.
He's a builder of the folk world,
in Chicago, the region and the continent.
His voice and song writing bring the heart of
folk music into our contemporary world with
humor,
authenticity and a great warm voice."

"Michael Smith, the uniquely droll songwriter and hip balladeer " Hedy Weiss, Theater Critic, Sun Times
Michael Smith travels constantly, playing
concert halls and house concerts, clubs and
festivals. It's a wonder to me how he can
also be prolific both in the musical theater
and singer/songwriter world. An evening with
Michael will really take you else where. He
tackles a calliope of subjects with a direct
humor and tact at the same time. We're all
great world observers in the audience, but we
still learn new ways of looking at humanity
from Michael.
"the thing that stands out most in Michael's
work is his unpredictable creativity just
when you think you know where he's going,
lyrically or musically, he'll turn a
metaphoric corner on you, double back, sneak
up behind you and slip a rainbow in your
pocket.
those of us who are songwriters or guitar
players ... learn why there really are no
rules when it comes to the game of music"

When Amsterdam is golden in the morning
Margaret brings him breakfast
She believes him
He thinks that tulips bloom beneath the snow
He's mad as he can be
But Margaret only sees that sometimes
Sometimes she sees her unborn children in his
eyes.
