jonathan byrds buzz "izz" big and broad.
(say that with a deep southern accent.) thats
what happens when you are one of six winners of
the 2003 new folk competition at the kerrville
folk festival. how much of an honor is that?
lyle lovett, nancy griffith, and shawn colvin
have all been finalists at the legendary texas
festival. born in fayetteville, nc, byrd
convinced his father to buy him a cheap electric
guitar.

all wood and stones: intimate
acoustic covers of rolling stones songs
in an album that has the critics taking
notice, james lee stanley and john batdorf strip eleven classic
rolling stones songs down to their bare essence and breathe new
life into them; rendering the stones' larger-than-life songs
with acoustic instruments and tight harmonies.
in an era where britney spears has covered "satisfaction," this
album is a stroke of genius and class. this understated work has
to be heard to be believed. originally just a studio project,
the success of this album brought it to live performance. |

a house concert by
radoslav lorkovic. most
of his time at lilfest was on stage was with others like
bianca de leon,
dave moore, michi regier.
come relax in a comfy chair and appreciate rad on his own again.
recently named most valuable player at the woody guthrie fest,
rad's future performance schedule is getting very busy and
interesting indeed.
remembering his earlier concerts at 711
that drew capacity crowds and extraordinary kudos we agreed to
open the house again for him this friday.
croatian born rad lorkovic draws from a multitude of influences
ranging from elegant classical and jazz styles to basic blues,
country and soul. rad takes on an unusually broad musical
spectrum and refines it into his distinctive piano style. his
tenure on the r&b, blues and folk circuits has culminated in
five critically acclaimed solo recordings. other artists call
him as a "monster" talent. radoslav lorkovic is fresh from
playing with jimmy lafave and odetta, and a hard-working year
including richard shindell, andy white and greg brown. rad has
been winning audiences around the world, italy, spain, britain,
even the canary islands. ahead? switzerland, england, ireland
and more italy. and don't miss blue parade, rad's new cd and his
live cd with andy white, oak center.

spelling his name as one word, and
capitalizing it only some of the time, johnsmith is a true folk
artist. he doesn't wear hype well, and refers to let his singing
and songwriting speak for him. and yet, to simply say that
johnsmith is a great singer/ songwriter would not be enough. in
addition to his musical abilities and finely tuned songwriting
skills, johnsmith possesses the even rarer gift of being able to
share his soul. that gift is the foundation on which everything
else about him is built, and it comes shining through in every
song he sings.

years ago i saw anne heaton at a chicago
night club, and it stuck in my mind. but i hadn't a clue until
reached her about this concert, when she told me she grew up
less than 90 yards away from 711 lake! oh how many
lilfest's she's missed... anyway, now i've got it. her
blend of piano and a deep, interesting voice have taken her to
many of the us's finest venues since she graduated from st.
ignatius, both on her own and as an opener for commercial
successful ladies like melissa ferrick and jewel.
but she's her own girl, and it's time she's welcomed back for a
hometown performance. spread the word with me, this is
just next week!
starting with lessons at age three, anne
was a studied classical pianist. (thank you, music institute of
the north shore, now chicago!) she listened to everything from
dexys midnight runners to joni mitchell to the rolling stones
to the fine young cannibals. while studying philosophy and
theology at notre dame, she sang in a rock band. after
graduation, she ran a music program for teenagers in chicagos
cabrini green housing projects. a few years later heaton
moved from chicago to new york and joined a gospel choir in
harlem. this was the point when anne started writing songs
and connecting with great acts like jewel and melissa ferrick as
an opener. she continues her career as a mainstage
singer/songwriter/performer, natch. and it's in this role that
she appears at lilfest. she won't need to use my third
floor musician's bed and breakfast. her parents live a
block away!
"a pair of rising singer-songwriters opened [jewel's]
show. first off was folksy anne
heaton, accompanied only by a keyboard and a soaring, rich
voice. though her set was short, clocking in under 20
minutes, heaton is a natural performer whose songs, like
jewel's, encapsulate various slice-of-life moments."

since bill
isles returned to performing in 2000, he has become one of
the most well known and highly respected singer/songwriters in
the midwest and has begun to headline shows nationally. his
songs are poetic reflections of life experiences. admittedly a
romantic, many of his lyrics describe human encounters
metaphorically. this multi-layering that has drawn fans to
listen over and over again.
kate, bill's singing partner and life partner, does tour some
with bill. this is her first appearance on the north shore of
chicago - except in his recordings. we look forward to finally
hearing her in person.
